From Police Chiefs to Underground Idols

The 14 newly announced actors fill out a sprawling character map that stretches from Tokyo's police brass to its criminal underworld.

Pierre Taki plays Sakamoto Mamoru, the Commissioner General of Police caught in the crosshairs of the Gas Human's campaign. Okabe Takashi takes on Tokyo Governor Miura Takeshi, scrambling to manage the crisis, while Natsukawa Yui portrays Kirishima Kazumi, Miura's rival in the ongoing gubernatorial race.

On the investigative side, Aoki Munetaka joins as Okamoto Shinya, the late father of Oguri Shun's detective protagonist and a former colleague of Commissioner Sakamoto. Sakō Yoshi (酒向芳) plays a pivotal role as Obata Hironori, the director of a care facility called Umikaze who harbors a secret tied to the larger mystery. Nakajima Ayumu (中島歩) portrays a younger version of the same character.

The criminal side of the roster is equally loaded. Nakano Hideo plays yakuza boss Ōtomo Saburō, a direct target of the Gas Human, with Matsuura Yūya as his son Riki. Nomura Shūhei appears as the younger version of Mori Yasutoshi, the ex-yakuza turned corporate CEO played by Takenouchi Yutaka.

Takashima Masahiro plays a filmmaker called Director Goro who has a fervent cult following. Kaku Kento (House of Ninjas) takes on the role of Kenta, a host who serves Kaho, the character played by Hirose Suzu. Morikawa Aoi rounds out the entertainment-world characters as Mimi, a former underground idol. Hara Hideko plays Mrs. Sakamoto, and Kobayashi Motoki (こばやし元樹) appears as Inspector Yoshida of the Metropolitan Police.

Eiga Natalie reports that both Kaku and Aoki approached the production themselves to volunteer for their roles, rather than being cast through the usual audition or offer process.

Beyond the 14, a dozen additional supporting cast members were also revealed. The list includes voice actress Mitsuishi Kotono (Sailor Moon, Evangelion), Morley Robertson, Furutachi Kanji, Imou Haruka (芋生悠), Ijima Kū (伊島空), Kawase Yōta, Saitō Yūna, Hiiragi Yōta, Mikawa Yūgo (三河悠冴), Yoshihara Mitsuo, Kondō Yoshimasa, and Wada Misa. Their specific roles have not been disclosed.

A Tokusatsu Reboot With Global Firepower

Human Vapor reboots Toho's 1960 tokusatsu film The Human Vapor No. 1, originally directed by Ishirō Honda. The new series opens with an unprecedented crime: a person suddenly expands and explodes during a live television broadcast. The killer turns out to be someone capable of transforming their body into gas at will, passing through any physical barrier. Oguri Shun and Aoi Yū lead the cast as Detective Okamoto Kenji and reporter Kōno Kyōko, pursuing the Gas Human through a string of preannounced killings. Hirose Suzu, Hayashi Kento, and Takenouchi Yutaka round out the previously announced leads, with UTA making his acting debut as the Gas Human.

Director Katayama Shinzō (Gannibal, Siblings of the Cape) helms all eight episodes. Yeon Sang-ho (Train to Busan) serves as executive producer and co-wrote the screenplay alongside Ryu Yong-jae. The gas transformation effects and large-scale destruction sequences are handled by Shirogumi, the VFX studio that won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects for Godzilla Minus One.

Looking Ahead

All eight episodes of Human Vapor premiere on Netflix on July 2, 2026, as a worldwide exclusive. The full-season drop means international audiences get the complete series the same day as Japan. As a Netflix Original produced for global distribution, the series is expected to launch with the platform's standard multilingual subtitle and dubbing support, though specific language details have not been confirmed.
