The Tower Falls Apart
Episode 75, titled "Zangai" (Remnants), picks up right where Episode 74 left off. Subaru has fled the Pleiades Watchtower after losing his memories, forgetting the rule that leaving means death. Outside, he's immediately attacked by a massive sandworm monster and barely survives, only to fall into an underground labyrinth. After dragging himself through it, he emerges right back at the tower's entrance.
What follows is the darkest stretch Re:Zero has produced in years. Subaru, stripped of his memories and unable to trust anyone, decides that everyone in the tower is a potential enemy. He reasons that someone among Emilia, Ram, Beatrice, Julius, Anastasia, Meili, and Shaula pushed him and caused his situation. His solution: eliminate them all.
But when he re-enters the tower, the killing has already been done for him. Every one of his companions lies dead, murdered by an unknown assailant. Even Shaula, the most obvious suspect after her eyes changed color last episode, is among the victims. Japanese viewers reacted with disbelief. "They're just... dead," one post read. "What is this, a horror anime?" wrote another. "Everyone? Wait, this is bad. This feels like the mansion attack all over again."
Patrasche's Sacrifice and Rem's Impossible Return
The one survivor is Patrasche, Subaru's ground dragon. In his panicked state, Subaru turns on her too, screaming that he needs to kill anyone still alive. He drives his sword into her. Patrasche doesn't fight back. Instead, she senses an incoming threat, throws Subaru onto her back, and runs, the blade still embedded in her body. She gives her life to save a master who just tried to kill her.
Viewers were gutted. "Patrasche, you... how can you be this devoted?" was a common sentiment across social media.
Then the episode delivers its biggest shock. A figure appears behind Subaru and taunts him: "Guess who's next, hero." The figure kills him instantly. The attacker appears to be Rem, who has been in a magical coma since Season 2. The end credits confirmed the voice belonged to Inori Minase, Rem's voice actor. Fans lost it. "That was Rem?!" "She's AWAKE?!" "Wait wait wait wait wait," one viewer posted, repeating the word four times.
The Blood Message
Return by Death resets Subaru to the moment just after his memory loss. This time, he hides his amnesia and starts quietly investigating. He skillfully bluffs his way through a conversation with Julius, impressing viewers with his ability to fake normalcy. "Is he really amnesiac? His conversation skills are suspiciously good," one fan noted.
His next conversation with Meili takes a darker turn. She whispers something cryptic about "last night" and asks how seriously she should take it. Before Subaru can respond, he blacks out. When he comes to, Meili is dead on the floor, strangled.
Subaru rolls up his sleeve. Carved into his arm in blood are the words: "Natsuki Subaru Sanjo" (Natsuki Subaru was here).
Viewers reacted with horror. "'Natsuki Subaru was here'... that's terrifying," one fan wrote. "What are we even watching?" asked another. The episode suggests Subaru himself may be the killer, acting during blackouts he can't remember.
