Netflix Pairs Re-Release With Classroom Screenings

The 1988 film, based on Akiyuki Nosaka's novel and set in wartime Hyogo Prefecture, follows 14-year-old Seita and his 4-year-old sister Setsuko after they lose their mother in an air raid. Netflix is treating the film's return to the Japanese catalog as more than a routine re-listing.

As part of the re-release, Netflix will offer free screening support to middle schools across Japan. Schools that apply and receive permission from the film's publisher, Shinchōsha, will get complimentary viewing codes. The initiative positions Grave of the Fireflies as a classroom resource, not just a catalog title.

Netflix is also running a broader campaign under the banner "#Netflix感想文" (roughly, "Netflix Essay"), themed around "watch, feel, think, express." A writing workshop for fifth- and sixth-graders takes place on July 11, four days before the film goes live. From July 15 through August 31, viewers can post their responses on the Japanese blogging platform note using the hashtags #火垂るの墓 and #Netflix感想文.

The timing is deliberate. The campaign spans Japan's summer break and overlaps with the August anniversary of the end of World War II, when Japanese media traditionally revisits wartime stories.

From Global Hit to Domestic Return

Grave of the Fireflies first arrived on Netflix in September 2024, launching in over 190 countries and territories outside Japan. It ranked seventh on Netflix's Global Top 10 for non-English films in its debut week, logging 2.2 million viewing hours. The film's emotional core clearly translated across cultures and decades.

Japan itself had to wait. The domestic Netflix debut came on July 15, 2025, making it the first Studio Ghibli title to stream on Netflix within Japan. That release added 33 subtitle languages and 10 dubbed audio tracks.

Netflix also commissioned audio description guides for visually impaired viewers. The Japanese-language audio guide features Shōta Yasuda of the boy band SUPER EIGHT (formerly Kanjani Eight), who has a personal connection to the film's setting in Hyogo Prefecture, where he grew up. The English audio guide was recorded by Patrick Harlan, an American comedian and Harvard graduate who has been a fixture of Japanese television for nearly three decades as one half of the bilingual comedy duo Pakkun Makkun.

Looking Ahead

The July 15 return brings Grave of the Fireflies back to Netflix Japan after its initial domestic streaming window. For international subscribers, the film remains available on Netflix in most territories worldwide, with no removal announced.

The school screening program does not have a published deadline in the Japanese entertainment news site Eiga Natalie's report, so interested schools in Japan should check the application form sooner rather than later. The note essay campaign runs through August 31, 2026.

The film is currently streaming on Netflix in most regions outside Japan. The source novel by Akiyuki Nosaka is published in English by several translators, though availability varies by market.
