Kingdom is based on the manga by Yasuhisa Hara, currently serialized in Weekly Young Jump published by Shueisha. The manga has surpassed 110 million copies in circulation, and the fourth live-action film Kingdom: Return of the Great General was released in 2024, earning over 8 billion yen at the box office. The story follows Shin, a young boy who dreams of becoming a great general, and Ei Sei, the young king who will later become China's first emperor, as they navigate the Warring States period of ancient China.
The anime series has aired five seasons to date, with Season 1 and 2 broadcast on NHK BS Premium from 2012 to 2014, followed by Seasons 3 through 5 airing from 2021 to 2024. Kingdom Season 6 premiered on October 4, 2025, on NHK General TV at 24:10. The sixth season depicts Shin finally going to battle carrying the glaive of Ouki, the legendary great general who named the Hi Shin Unit and showed Shin the path to becoming a great general before entrusting his weapon to him eight years prior. Now matured through countless battles, Shin prepares to face the full-scale war against Zhao wielding Ouki's glaive.
Tomonari Sora composed, wrote lyrics, and arranged Hoko, creating a powerful track that complements the escalating conflict depicted in the series. The song's artwork was also designed by Tomonari Sora himself. The opening theme song for Season 6, Ikite Sansan, is performed by Ikimonogakari.
Kingdom Season 6 is currently airing on NHK General TV, with the ending theme Hoko available for digital release starting October 19, 2025.
